The Story behind the Story behind the Painting: The Assumption of Mary at Xavier University

Topic Concerned Fredrick Browns, “The Assumption of Mary”  painted for Xavier Universities Library.  Xavier University started as a black college.  Fredrick Brown painted in a German Expression combined with African Art style.  The painting is 3 stories tall and is stretched canvas. The virgin Mary’s hands are 25 feet wide.  The virgin Mary is an “incultured” Virgin mary.  The presenter discussed the various figures found in the painting which include historic figures, people important to the history and culture of the college and lots of Jazz figures.
